TRANSLATION & READING NOTES

READING THE MANGA

The manga is scanned as it appears in the Japanese publication "Shonen Sunday.
That is, it's read from right to left. I generally keep the words in the same
places as they appear in the original.

PARDON MY JAPANESE...

First of all, obviously I'm not a professional translator. I've studied Japanese
and translate this for my own enjoyment, so I just don't forget what I've learned.
(Not that manga is a very good way of "studying the Japanese language" so to
speak, it's fun to read...) That and I like continuing to read and learn more about
the Japanese culture and language.

Anyway, I do take a few minor liberties in translating. I try to keep things as literal
as possible while still trying to flow in natural English (ie. not quite "bookish")
and build on character personalities. There are swear words where the language becomes
so in the original Japanese version. I also find mistranlations and errors in my
translating here and there. Plus there's almost always lines that bowl me over
in regards to what they really mean...

This isn't perfect, but hopefully passable. Special thanks to Roy for doing some
proofing for me, as well as being my dictionary, thesaurus, and all-around Japanese crash
course instrcutor when I'm thrown for a loop. Heh-heh.

CHAPTER 333 GLOSSARY & NOTES

Please refer to the Inuyasha General Glossary for recurring words that remain untranslated.

YADORI SANAGI - (title) While this is the term used for the creature Inuyasha and the gang came up against in this chapter, I chose to translate it. The word means "parasitic pupa," so I called it "parasite" throughout this, as well as in subsequent chapters.

KITSUNE-SAMA... - (starting on page 2) "kitsune-sama" means fox-master or fox-lord. Because this was an early version of the translation, I decided to just stick with referring to the youkai as o-kitsune-sama or kitsune-sama.

BIDDING THE GANG GOODNIGHT - (page 6) He says "dewa goyurito" This is an expression used that sort of tells someone that they're welcome at your place, or it's like an expression of gratitude. A literal translation might be "please take your time."

DON'T GIVE ME THAT LOOK - (page 7) A more literal translation of his line was "don't give me that expression and comment like that." Which sounded a little unnatural in Enlgish.

YOUKAI-EXTERMINATION PILLS - (page 11) Sango calls them youkai taijya you no nioi tama, meaning "scent balls used to exterminate youkai." Those are likely pills that have a smell that can incapacitate youkai. She's used it before, as well. And of course, it has adverse effects on poor Inuyasha... o.O

THIS IS AWFUL STUFF! - (page 17) Miroku literally says "torimochi." Which I simply did not know how to translate.
