TRANSLATION & READING NOTES

READING THE MANGA

The manga is scanned as it appears in the Japanese publication "Shonen Sunday.
That is, it's read from right to left. I generally keep the words in the same
places as they appear in the original.

PARDON MY JAPANESE...

First of all, obviously I'm not a professional translator. I've studied Japanese
and translate this for my own enjoyment, so I just don't forget what I've learned.
(Not that manga is a very good way of "studying the Japanese language" so to
speak, it's fun to read...) That and I like continuing to read and learn more about
the Japanese culture and language.

Anyway, I do take a few minor liberties in translating. I try to keep things as literal
as possible while still trying to flow in natural English (ie. not quite "bookish")
and build on character personalities. There are swear words where the language becomes
so in the original Japanese version. I also find mistranlations and errors in my
translating here and there. Plus there's almost always lines that bowl me over
in regards to what they really mean...

This isn't perfect, but hopefully passable.

LOUNGING AROUND - (page 3) Miroku here uses the phrase "gorogoro shite inasai," which generally means something like "just be lazy and idle." Or... something like that.

I also kept a subsequent line of his literally translated, ("I'm going to spread my wings for a bit..." - "watashi wa chotto hane o nobashite kuru") although I'm sure I could have substituted another sort of equivalent phrase. It means something like he just wants to get out for a while, while Sango obviously seems to want him to hang around with her. ;)

INUYASHA-KUN - (page 5) Not really anything explanitory, I just thought it was so darn cute that Mama called he boy "Inuyasha-kun." ^_^ (The -kun suffix is a little term of endearment). And I just love the way Kagome goes in to see him sleeping, and he's snuggling Tessaiga like a security blankie there... Heehee.

CURSE YOUUuUuuU!!11 - (page 8) Man, I got a kick out of this part for some reason!! Yes, he's literally chanting "U~~ RA~~ MI~~ HA~~ RA~~ SA~~ DE!!!" Which, when looked at, really seems to translate to "I'll put a curse/spell up."

Poor Inuyasha. His little nose got so assaulted again.

That also reminds me... he's grilling fish called "kusaya." Kusaya is marinated in a fermented concoction, and is described as being quite possibly the worst-smelling thing to ever exist. It literally smells like crap. XD So if you were smelling it, you'd probably be just as sick as Inuyasha was. Hee. I've never actually tasted it (and most of my friends say they just can't get past the smell enough to taste it), but I've heard it actually tastes pretty good. I'm not going to be brave enough to try it for a long time.

DOGGIE OBEDIENCE SCHOOL - (page 8, page 18) Jii-chan tells Inuyasha "otonashiku shitenasai," which basically means "be obedient" or "behave yourself," or "do quietly as you're told." Something along those lines. Souta, in the end, also says "otanashiku natta," which means "he became obedient/quiet."

And just for the record... my favorite part of this whole chapter was Inyasha running around the table. XD My dogs always do that when they're bored, too. Except they do it around the kitchen. Hee...

PRETTY PLEASE WITH RAMEN ON TOP? - (page 11, page 14) In both of these lines where Kagome is asking Inuyasha "for me, please," she just uses the word "onegai," which at its simplest nuance means "please (do me a favor)."

OKAYU - (page 16) I'm more of a fan of ochazuke (rice with soup/tea) than okayu, but it's good nontheless. Okayu is rice that is simmered with a lot of water and made super soft and sloshy. It's almost like pudding.

Next week on Inuyasha: In one foul swoop, Kagome's humble little dream and her very own cooking are dashed. We just want to... stop the water. See ya then!!
