"Inhabitants of Hell"

Volume 48, part 1
written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi

PAGE 2

1
A view of Sesshoumaru, staring at the Hell-dog from across the rift that has been opened up on the pathway. The figures of Rin and Kohaku can be seen inside of the dog's body.

2
A closer view of Rin and Kohaku, who are still unconscious.

PAGE 3

1
A view of Rin. Around her, there is energy (bubbles) that seem to be coalescing into...

2
The Pallbearers of the afterlife begin to appear.

3
Close up Sesshoumaru as he sees them.

SESSHOUMARU (thinking)
The minions from the Next World!

4
He rushes forward, drawing Tenseiga.

SESSHOUMARU (thinking)
Healing Tenseiga!

PAGE 4

1
In a swift movement, Sesshoumaru uses Tenseiga to slice completely through the Hell-dog's body.

2
The Hell-dog's body breaks in half...

PAGE 5

1
The two halves of the Hell-dog's body fall, to either side of the pathway...

2
....and fall to into the pools of liquid below.

[NOTE: I'm actually not sure if the river below the path is water, shouki, or something else, and I don't want to draw conclusions... so I'll just call it "liquid" for the sake of being non-specific... ^^]

3
Sesshoumaru kneels down in front of Rin and Kohaku, who have fallen to the ground on the pathway. Both are still unconscious.

PAGE 6

1
Sesshoumaru lays a hand on Rin's face. Her eyes are still closed...

RIN
(moaning)

2
Close side view of Sesshoumaru, his face still a bit unreadable... though I might call it "relieved."

3
Wider view of the scene...

SESSHOUMARU (thinking)
She's alive...

4
A view of the outside of Sesshoumaru's mother's palace.

SESSHOUMARU'S MOTHER (off)
The minions of the Next World, and the Hell-dog are both creatures of Hell...
And could be slain by a healing sword, hm?

PAGE 7

1
A view of Sesshoumaru's mother, still seated on the platform, and Jaken, who is standing in front of her...

JAKEN
Eh...
Sesshoumaru-sama is using Tenseiga's.... healing blade!?

SESSHOUMARU'S MOTHER
Yes.
I know what is happening within.

2
She holds up the Meidou-stone in her hands.

SESSHOUMARU'S MOTHER
This Meidou-stone is linked to the next world, you see.

3
View of Jaken, who looks rather strained.

JAKEN (thinking)
.oO( That the healing blade was used means that...
.oO( ...Rin's life had been in danger!? )

4
Wide view of Sesshoumaru's mom and Jaken as they speak.

SESSHOUMARU'S MOTHER
Little yokai.

JAKEN
Wha!? Me!?
I am named Jaken...

5
Close view of Sesshoumaru's mother.

SESSHOUMARU'S MOTHER
That human girl, what is she to Sesshoumaru?

PAGE 8

1
Close view of Jaken, who looks up at her, his expression rather strained.

JAKEN
All I can tell you is...
Well, Rin always is treated more favorably than I, Jaken,
who have been his servant for a great many years.

2
Close up of Sesshoumaru's mother...

SESSHOUMARU'S MOTHER
The girl will die.

3
Jaken is obviously surprised/worried.

JAKEN
Huh?

SESSHOUMARU'S MOTHER
Not just the girl, but Sesshoumaru, as well...

4
A view of Sesshoumaru, back on the path, kneeling over Rin and Kohaku.

SESSHOUMARU'S MOTHER (voiceover -- off)
As long as he cannot escape the path of darkness, there is no life.

PAGE 9

1
Kohaku's eyes open...

KOHAKU
...ugh.

2
Sesshoumaru notices this...

3
Kohaku props himself up on his elbows and sees Sesshoumaru.

KOHAKU
Sesshoumaru-sama...

4
And he looks down at Rin, who is still unconscious.

KOHAKU
Rin...

5
Sesshoumaru turns and looks at something over his shoulder.

6
Close view of Sesshoumaru.

SESSHOUMARU
You seem able to move.
It's the power of the Shikon fragment... isn't it.

7
Kohaku looks up at him.

KOHAKU
What about Rin...

PAGE 10

1
Suddenly, the path on the other side of the rift begins to crumble.

KOHAKU
The path is...

2
Sesshoumaru notices a few dark figures moving in on them from above. They appear to be winged creatures... birds, perhaps?

3
A closer view of the creatures shows that they are skeletons of bird-like creatures, flying towards them.

4
Sesshoumaru uses his claws to fight through them.

PAGE 11

1
From the pool below, a huge tentacle begins to grow, and shoot up towards them.

2
It begins to split, grow, and form into three heads, shaped like face of the Hell-dog from before.

PAGE 12

1
Sesshoumaru rushes forward to attack, and shouts at Kohaku.

SESSHOUMARU
Take Rin and run!

2
Kohaku pulls Rin onto his back and gets up.

KOHAKU
Right!

3
Sesshoumaru uses Tenseiga to once again slice through the neck of the new Hell-dog creature...

4
He tears through two of its heads, and they crash to the surface of the pathway.

5
The pathway underneath them begins to crumble and crash into the space below...

PAGE 13

1
Sesshoumaru faces the third head of the Hell-dog creature, as Kohaku takes Rin on his back and tries to run away from the fight. Just below Kohaku, the Hell-dog slams into the face of the rift with a loud impact.

KOHAKU
!

2
Suddenly, Sesshoumaru has them both in his arm and is carrying them out of the way.

3
He manages to pull them to safety. As he lands on the ground, just behind him, the pathway continues to crumble away...

4
Sesshoumaru looks down at Kohaku.

SESSHOUMARU
Don't make needless trouble for me.

[NOTE: This kind of seems like, "Take care of it, and don't make me have to save your butt!!"]

KOHAKU
O... okay.

PAGE 14

1
Close view of Sesshoumaru as he looks down at Kohaku.

SESSHOUMARU
This arm...

2
A close view of said arm, which is holding Tenseiga...

SESSHOUMARU (cont. -- off)
Is to be used for weilding the sword.

3
Kohaku looks up at him, looking a bit strained.

KOHAKU
Right.

4
Sesshoumaru turns and begins to walk on.

SESSHOUMARU
Come, and stay close.

5
Dark frame.

6
Wide view of Sesshoumaru and Kohaku, with Rin on Kohaku's back. From this view, we see that the path behind them crumbles...

PAGE 15

1
And the path continues to crumble behind them...

2
Kohaku looks back over his shoulder, and can see the shadow-like figures of the skeleton birds in the distance.

KOHAKU
They didn't come and attack us...

3
Side view of Sesshoumaru.

SESSHOUMARU (thinking)
.oO( Meaning... continue on. )

4
A panel of Tenseiga, which is once again sheathed and at his side.

SESSHOUMARU (thinking)
.oO( After this point... )
.oO(
Does it mean there is something to improve the Meidou-zangetsuha? )

5
Meanwhile, back at Mother's palace...

SESSHOUMARU'S MOTHER
The road back continues to crumble,
And the desitination is Hell.

PAGE 16

1
Jaken looks up at her, still clearly worried.

JAKEN
Um....
When he reaches Hell, will something be there?

SESSHOUMARU'S MOTHER
There will be nothing.

2
Jaken seems surprised at this.

JAKEN
What!? But...
This was a trial in order to improve the Tenseiga, was it not?

3
Close view of Sesshoumaru's mother, who still seems rather calm or stoic, despite this.

SESSHOUMARU'S MOTHER
Once one has stepped into the root of Hell's darkness, it's the end ------
Even Sesshoumaru will not be able to return again.

4
Once again, a view of Sesshoumaru, Kohaku, and Rin, as they continue on the pathway.

SESSHOUMARU'S MOTHER (voiceover -- off)
Not to mention the lives of the human children,
With each stop that is taken on the Dark Path ------

PAGE 17

[ SCAN ]

1
A view of Kohaku's footsteps, as he walks forward.

2
Kohaku looks back at Rin, worried.

KOHAKU
Rin...?

3
He calls up to Sesshoumaru.

SESSHOUMARU
Sesshoumaru-sama...

4
A panel of Rin, who looks very limp as she's being carried...

5
A close up of Kohaku's troubled expression.

KOHAKU
Rin... isn't breathing...

6
And the expression on Sesshoumaru's face is once of absolute disbelief.

PAGE 18

1
Sesshoumaru's mother looks into the Meidou-stone and appears to have seen what has happened.

SESSHOUMARU'S MOTHER
The girl stopped breathing, hasn't she...
So then, Sesshoumaru...

2
A panel, showing Sesshoumaru, Kohaku, and Rin, standing on the pathway. Behind them, the road has crumbled away. and it appears that they are surrounded by darkness.

SESSHOUMARU'S MOTHER (voiceover -- off)
The Darkness of Hell that, once you have stepped into it, you cannot return from,
Is right before you...
