PART 2: Getting a little deeper

HIKARI TO KAGE!

Usually I work on this in a few layers and then combine them later. Light and shadow are the fun part! And it really is what gives a lot of life to the piece, too.

Anyway, for this stage, I decided on the light source and colored in the shadows and highlights as needed. This part sometimes takes a little experimentation. My favorite thing to do is either look at some reference books for a similar lighting situation...

...or I just get out a flashlight and start looking in the mirror. Heh-heh.

At first, I had the extra hot highlights (the pinks) in more places, especially around his chest, but it started looking werid, so I toned it down a bit.

LIGHTING EFFECTS

Now THIS is the fun part. Actually, I had to hold back from going overboard on this part since the final lighting effects come a bit later.

Both the airbrush and paintbrush tool are used in this part. I can't really give deatiled how-to's on how to do this, since part of it is just artistry. For the most part, it's just like sprinkling paint or glitter onto something. I chose three bright colors (white, yellow, and hot pink) and started spray-painting Inuyasha with brilliant graffiti.

Yes, it will look odd at this point.

By varying the brush sizes and pressures, I got the effect shown in the top picture. He kinda ends up looking like he's getting nailed by a million and one paintballs, doesn't he?

Anyway, then you just experiment with different effects. Setting the bodyglow layer to "overlay" gave me the look I wanted, on the bottom picture. This was essentially little sparkles of magic energy only coming from within his body.

I also stayed away from putting the effects on his hands, feet, and face. Too distracting on his face.

MORE LIGHTING EFFECTS

Here's where a little more experimentation definitely came in. I decided that I actually wanted the power of the Shikon Jewel to be radiating from Inuyasha's body here. So for this, I brushed a glowing layer of "Shikon Light" coming from his heart.

For the colors, I took a screenshot of the Jewel from the show as reference to for the color. The jewel itself is a bright pink color, with magenta shadows.

I also used the same technique on the Inuyasha-Kagome piece.

Again, for color references, I used several screenshots that I took of the show.
